IF TOMORROW NEVER COMES
My wife and I are re-watching the old medical drama series ER. In the episode titled On the Beach, Dr. Mark Greene (played by Anthony Edwards) lives out his final days on Earth by taking his daughter on a Hawaiian vacation. He shows her where he used to live and teaches her how to surf and drive a manual transmission vehicle, among other things. He was doing everything he never had time for because of work commitments. Just before his death, he offers her sage advice "Be generous with your time." Mark lived each of those last days as if tomorrow would never come, and this was precisely the case for him.
After much reflection, I decided to pose this question: "How would you live your life if you knew tomorrow would never come?" The answer to this question does not have to be about one facing a terminal illness or knowing the exact day one will transition from this world. Hold space for yourself in quiet introspection and visualize rising in the morning and being told this is the last day of your life as there is no tomorrow. Here are some questions to ponder:
· How would you make the best use of the time you have left?
· Who do you spend the day with, if anybody?
· Like Mark Greene, what sage advice would you offer to a person(s) or the world?
· In the final 24 hours, what would you do to leave your mark on making this world a better place to live?
Time is a precious commodity, and we have only a finite amount to spend in the best way possible. How wonderful would it be if we lived each day as if it were our last and put our best effort forward. Remember that this is a suggested exercise to help you shift your perspective as you begin each day. Without a doubt, some days will be better than others. After all, we are living the human experience. Start with today and build from there. Do your best with what you have in each moment to fulfill your journey.
I leave you with a Zac Brown Band song that speaks to this notion. Until next time -
Namaste,
Tim
