DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?
Author's note: We will journey through the senses over the next several weeks and learn how to access them mindfully. Today we begin with the healing power of sound.
In the 1995 movie, Mr. Holland's Opus, Glenn Holland offers his definition of music - "Playing music is supposed to be fun. It's about heart, feelings, moving people, and something beautiful, and not about notes on a page. I can teach you notes on a page; I can't teach you that other stuff."
Sound is a vibration interpreted by the brain after it passes through the auditory canal. Recall from memory forms the basis of our interpretation and subsequent experience (both good and bad). How do we mindfully use sound? When life becomes chaotic, many of us seek solace in the company of music.
Music, as Mr. Holland said, "moves people." It can create or evoke an emotional response depending on an individual's affect or state of mind. We all have had or do have our go-to song playlist(s) when we are happy or sad, need inspiration (for exercise), have new relationships, or break ups. The list is endless. Music has become the very fabric of inter and intrapersonal communication. It is not the only tool we use to express ourselves; it is a great way to find common ground with fellow human beings. How do we tap into the healing power of sound? Resonance.
My definition of resonance is how something aligns with and nourishes the mind, body, and spirit. Two people experiencing sadness can listen to the same song - for one, it may be emotionally uplifting, and for the other, it does nothing to change the emotional state. Why? - the unique journeys we walk have shaped our perceptions. Do you hear what I hear or not?
I suggest exploring the different music genres to find what brings you peace and harmony. I recently reconnected with a song I had not heard in decades - Chuck Mangione's Feels So Good. As I listened, it brought back fond memories of when I was a member of the Marist High School Marching and Concert Band and wanted to emulate Mr. Mangione. Heck, everybody in the trumpet section wished to play this song. It never happened for me, but its resonance feels so good.
To begin your exploration of the beautiful world of music, I will leave you a few examples of what may or may not nourish your spirit. Life is all about trial and error, so happy journeying. Until next time -
Namaste,
Tim
P.S. If you feel inspired, please add to the list of examples.
