YOU GET WHAT YOU GIVE

In 2010, the Zac Brown Band released the album You Get What You Give (Southern Ground/Atlantic Records); said title is the inspiration for this week's blog post. One interpretation of this phrase can be - do good, and you will receive it back. For this discussion, I offer a way to accomplish this is to pay it forward.

I have worn many hats during my journey through this lifetime, from soldier to yoga teacher. The common denominator - are the incredible mentors who gave their time to help me to excel in each of my chosen career paths. Many times all that I needed was a phone call or an email with an answer to my questions. However, I appreciate(d) the most the time spent in-person conversations (sometimes hours) with patience, kindness, and the willingness to help me be the best version possible. These people are great role models for their respective lifepaths, and I promised to honor their time by always seeking the opportunity to help the next one in line. What does this mean?

As I progressed through the many versions of myself, I always found it most gratifying (and still do) to be able to take what I have learned and share it with another who is now walking where I once had. Whether as a fire lieutenant or yoga teacher, the opportunity to watch another person(s) grow and even do it better than myself is one of life's sweetest rewards.

I ask each of you, my readers, to honor the mentors in your life and pay it forward by sharing your talents with others, whether through your chosen profession or volunteer work. A guiding principle you can lean in to assist you in this endeavor - is the love for what you do.

I leave you with another Zac Brown song. Listen closely, and you may find a familiar phrase echoed in this post. Until next time -

Namaste,

Tim
