The Healing Wonders of Mother Nature

Summer always seems to fly by like the speed of light, which means that autumn is fast approaching. I am a big fan of the fall season's crisp air, change of colors, and the smell of fallen leaves. It is the time of year when the energy of the plant kingdom returns to the earth from which it springs as Mother Nature prepares for the long winter nap. During this period, our natural biorhythms may become disrupted by the pending time change (if you live in a part of the country that does so). We must now pause to ground and reset.

This week, I taught the first in a series of four yoga classes as part of a fundraiser for the Veterans Healing Farm in Hendersonville, North Carolina. As I prepared for this event, I thought about the change of season and decided to offer sequences that would provide a grounding experience. I had previously attended outdoor yoga classes, but this was my first in the teacher's seat. Throughout the session, I asked the students to observe what it was like to be in the moment, absorb the sounds of nature (along with a few motorized vehicles), and find their center as they prepare for the autumnal equinox on September 22nd.

I must admit that even I was mesmerized by becoming one with nature. Birds were chirping, water flowing from the nearby creek, the sun shining brightly - all made for the start of a glorious morning. Besides a grounding yoga practice, what are some other things one can do to rebalance?

Finding a path that takes you to the healing wonders of Mother Nature is paramount to a more balanced life. Whether you take a hike or drive through the mountains, swim in the ocean or your pool, or sit on a park bench and watch the clouds go by, note what it feels like to be present and genuinely engaged with life. One more thing - set the smartphone aside so you can enjoy the ride. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Until next time -

Namaste,

Tim
