In my blog titled Passion (What Moves You?), I offered readers a list of brainstorming questions to aid them in making this world a better place to live. Today, we will discuss a motto/mantra that may be used as a guiding principle as you continue to explore your mission for this lifetime - Sic Parvis Magna.

Sic Parvis Magna was a motto adopted by the English explorer Sir Francis Drake, which translated means "Thus great things from small things (come)." A more liberal interpretation of the phrase is "Greatness from small beginnings." Surflegacy.net offers why Drake may have used Sic Parvis Magna as words to live by. Drake was born into a family of farmers, apprenticed to a sailing ship (by his father) at a young age, became a prolific navigator, and was the first explorer to circumnavigate the world in a single voyage (1577-1580). Drake rose from nothing to become knighted by Queen Elizabeth I -greatness from small beginnings (2023).

I learned a valuable lesson about the small things. A colleague and I are planning a yoga for stress workshop, and we met with our mentor to help plan this event. We discussed a potential venue based on the projected number of attendees. Our mentor gave us this sage advice - start small ( as this would be our first endeavor). It is better to have a small, filled space versus a more extensive, half-empty venue. We must plant the seeds before the garden can grow- Sic Parvis Magna.
