AFTERMATH
"One day, you'll wake up and things won't hurt as bad. You'll be able to remember the good things about your friend and not just the end. For me, that's when I knew I was finally able to move on." – Kristin Svinth.
Since 2014, I have written and spoken about the suicide of a fire department colleague - a call that I had to respond to and bear witness to. However, I have never discussed how I processed this traumatic event.
In observance of Suicide Prevention Month, I will release a two-part video blog of my experience with being left behind. In part one, I will talk about the aftermath and ensuing sixteen years of mental health struggles. In part two, I will discuss my healing journey and redemption. Everyone's story is different - this is mine.
Note: I will wear a headset for sound clarity in the videos.
If either you or someone you know is struggling with mental health issues, please get in touch with a licensed health provider, therapist, or peer support specialist. The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline is available as a resource as well. Dial 988, and if you are a veteran, press 1.
